Roguelette
A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux
Made for the GMTK Jam, with the theme Loop. I asked: what if a roguelike, like Slay the Spire, wasn’t a card game—but a roulette? You build and customize your roulette instead of a deck, spinning to battle enemies. Start with a simple 8-slot wheel, then add, remove, and upgrade(Not implemented) slices as you progress. Though still a prototype, the design space is wide open.
Roguelette – Core Ideas
-
Roulette-Based Combat: Start with a basic roulette with 8 slots, damage, healing, armor. All slice effects trigger at the end of turn (order/targets chosen by player).
-
Multiple Roulettes: Choose what roulette to use before battles. (Not implemented)
-
Relics & Bosses: Each boss drops a unique relic and has one of three possible relic loadouts. The unique relic, whatever it is, lets you hold one more Roulette. (Not implemented)
-
No Duplicate Relics/Artifacts: Each roulette has unique upgrades. (Not implemented)
Slice Ideas (Not implemented)
-
Big D: Right half of the wheel alternates each turn between high damage and nothing.
-
Narcissism: Gains weight(number of slices in the roulette) and reduces another’s. Stronger the heavier it gets. Resets each battle.
-
Echo (Legendary): Repeats the last used slice. Chains for bonus.
-
*** (Idle Effect)***: Triggers if unused; expires afterward.
Relics (Global Upgrades) (Not implemented)
-
Lucky Shot (Epic): First spin, pick a slice. If hit, rest of combat, proc it twice.
-
Safety Net: Once per turn, landing on empties grants 1 roll.
-
Cursed Mirror (Boss): Every 4 turns—fill empties with Echo. Every 5—clear half the roulette.
Artifacts (Roulette-Specific Upgrades) (Not implemented)
-
Time Warp (Epic): Chosen slice slows the pointer down to increase hit chance.
-
Soul Binding (Rare): One slice becomes "nothing" on the wheel but can be used once freely per turn, immune to any changes.
Tokens (Consumables) (Not implemented)
Similar to potions in Slay the Spire. Small effects, no cost, one-time use.
Keywords (Not implemented)
-
First Strike: Extra effect if used first.
-
Last Hope: Extra effect if used last.
-
Berserk: Triggers bonus at low HP.
-
Chain: Bonus on consequetive use in a turn.
-
Resonance: Bonus after using same-type slice.
-
Balance: Bonus after using different-type slice.
-
Dazed: Lose spins.
-
Empty: Slice does nothing. Either exhausts or expires.
Roulette Concepts (Not implemented)
Each roulette has a unique passive + Special Slice. Higher slot count = more powerful effects, since more slots = less consistency.
-
The Big Boy: All weights doubled. Expire slices heal.
Belly Slam: Big damage + splash. -
The Vegan: No attacks. Extra spins & rerolls.
Spore Bloom: Adds spin; doubles all buffs/debuffs this turn. -
The Two-Faced: Two halves alternate each turn.
Mirror Veil: Use all slices from the other side. -
The Megamind: 36 slots. All slices exhaust.
Singularity: AOE. Next turn gain spins = empty slots. -
The Apprentice: All magic +X. Fewer spins.
Spell Echo: All magic gains resonance. -
The Brute: No magic. No rerolls. -1 spin. Attacks +X.
Bonk: Big damage + dazed. Berserk doubles both values. -
The Zealot: Some slices at the start of each combat will gain the keywords “Righteousness” or “Doubt”. Can become the Faithless permanently.
Miracle: Big heal. All non-holy become epic+ slices. -
The Faithless: No magic/holy. Boosts all else.
Realization: Turns "nothing" into strong slices. -
The Greedy: Scales with gold.
Investment Spike: Deal and block based on gold. -
The Hoarder: Replace expired slices from reserve(lets you add slices to a reserve that replace original slices).
Cache Burst: Deals damage per unique slice. -
The Transgressive: 17-slot wheel, half randomized.
Premeditated Chaos: All slices become random for a turn; triple spins. -
The Watcher: Wheel never stops, rolls at the same speed(fast) and you press space again to "choose" slice. No rerolls.
Contemplation: Resets the entire fight. Can reroll that. -
Russian Roulette: Fixed 6 slots. Every slice boosts gold gained.
Skull ()*: Take damage.
